A friend brought over his Z-28 (1x12 combo) for me to check out and compare to my Mazerati (2x10 combo). The one thing that was really apparent was the Z-28 was much much louder than my rati. Should that be, or is there possibly something wrong with my amp?
Thanks
Edit - I thought it would be cool to add this. My friend is Matt Rae from The Arlen Roth Band (www.mattrae.com). I shot some clips of him comparing our 2 amps. He's playing my 1952 Tele in the first and third segment and a partscaster of mine in the middle one.

If your output tubes have 6 months or more of average use you might try a new quad or a whole new set. Zs 2 x 10s are equal or greater in efficiency to most any single 12 so it's not the speakers.

It could also have to do with EQ. One amp can *seem* louder than another because of the voicing of the amp and/or how it is EQ'd.

Maybe I'll try some new power tubes. His Z-28 was a 10:00 and my rati was about 2:00 for the volume's to be equal. Any suggestions for power tubes? I know nothing about these things. Thanks

Probably go with the GT EL-84 S at a #5 or #6 rating.

I agree with you here..... The Mazerati is really a 50 or so watt amp (I do not care what it says in the specs) and it is also cathode biased and cathode biased amps generally appear to be much louder than grid biased amps. That is one reason an AC-30 is as loud as a Twin Reverb with three times the wattage. Yes .... new output set for a start. If you are hearing any hum then one of the tubes might be completely dead but this is less apparent on the Mazerati with it's split bias than in a MAZ 38.

I dunno here guy's, the Z/28 I had was one loud beast as well, WAY louder than expected, could be tubes/bias setting and the Db of the speaker too.

Myles,
The Z-28 has the stock speaker in it, and I was going into a Z-best with 2x12 Scumback speakers - 4 ohm. The volume was the same using the stock 10's in the combo.
