I have some non-matched NOS power tubes. I was wondering if it will hurt the amp to use them, or impact the tone. These are 6V6’s in a Z-28. Thanks.

Hi philbarnes, hopefuly Myles's may chime in, but to the best of my knowledge, there is a "little" leeway for power tubes. If i recall, about 7ma apart is about as far as youd want to go. They should be matched though, to within 2 or 3ma, max. The problem lies in the fact that the Z28 has a single bias pot to"average" the bias voltage to both tubes, so you have not only the problem of splitting the difference for a target bias point, you could also end up with a very unbalanced power section. It would get ta soundin pretty bad, and one of the tech guys can probably say whether or not at some point it could damage your transformer ?

Faster tube wear, more hum, and loss of sustain. Don't do it.
You will not hurt anything though.
Also, if too far off match what tube does one use to set the bias? Either one will be hot and be harsh or one will be too cold and grainy and not develop full output.
