Hey - I have an RXES. I love it. But, it's louder than I need it to be. I tried pulling a pair of the power tubes out today (the outside pair) and the amp seems to work fine, though now at a lower volume.) Are there any negative side effects to using the amp this way? Will I damage it? Will I wear any components faster?

Do not do this. .... and ... in this amp with it's split bias supply they are not inner and outer but left pair and right pair. Don't play around like this or your transformer will not be happy for long.

Hey - thanks for the definitive answer. Just to set the record straight, I didn't just wake up one day and decide to start yanking tubes. I was reading the "tube amp handbook" which suggested that this could be done for any push-pull amp, which I assumed the RXES had to be due to its high power rating for 4xEL84.
Anyway, I'm glad I didn't play it that way for long (less than 5 minutes.) Hope I didn't do any real damage. And I'm really glad you wrote back before I gigged with it that way tonight!

You will be fine .... Z amps are stout enough to take this sort of abuse and it would have been mostly the output tubes that took the punishment.
