New Maz 18 jr nr. Would appreciate any "general guideline" advice as to best way to utilize the master in relationship to the volume. Also what is "unity"? Thanks in advance.

Hi Victor, setting the master/volume depends on what you are wanting. One way people do things if they want some hair on the notes is, keep the master down and start cranking the volume until they are getting the right amount of drive they want then turn up the master to level they want to hear it. In this way the master becomes your volume and the volume knob becomes a gain knob of sorts. The other way is turn the master all the way up so that the amp turns into a non-master volume amp. Then all you use is the volume to dictate the sound level. This way will also give you the most amount of headroom. The other way is a combination of the above two where the volume is turned up so that the sound is still full but not clipping and the master is controlling the overall volume level. Unity gain refers to having the level of an effect at the same level as the volume coming out of the amp. It would be like using a overdrive pedal and setting it's volume so that there is no boost when turned on. Instead it is the same level as the volume coming out of the amp, so it is set to unity with the amp. If the pedal is quieter it is below unity and if it is louder it is above unity. Hope this helps.

Arun, Great explanation from you as usual. That's exactly how I approach my MAZ Jr. (and my 38's on order too!).
