I just picked up an Eminence Tonker for a great price, haven't even installed it yet. I've heard good things about Tonkers, but they're rated for 150 watts. I'm going to install it in my Mazerati 1x12 combo (32 watts).
Are there any tonal disadvantages with using a speaker that is rated that much higher with the amp? I've heard some people say that the speaker should be a little more closely matched to the amp's power, but on the other hand some folks are using this speaker in low powered combos.

The only possible disadvantage is if you want speaker distortion or the limiting effect of a straining speaker. Personally I've always liked a speaker to be more of a reproducer than an instrument unto itself. Speaker distortion is a valid sound but it will limit the versatility of your amp. From what I've read on here from other folks, the Tonker would probably be a good choice for a big, dynamic sound.

I'm using a Tonker & a Swamp Thang with my Ghia and Maz Sr. I love them both for different reasons, but they both make these amps sound huge. I just compared them to the stock G12H that came with the Maz and they are both more open/clearer, louder and bigger sounding. I always thought a G12H was a neutral sounding speaker, but compared to these, it sounded smaller, compressed and has a nasal midrange honk to it. It also breaks up more quickly.
This might be desirable for some, but I like the Emis better....hands down.

Agreed. My intial impressions of the Tonker are outstanding. Guess my concerns regarding amp/speaker power handling were unfounded! Man, what a nice speaker. Tried a Red Fang a while back too and it was also very nice, but I like the Tonker better.
