Hi, Those of you with Reverend Amp Experience, please share your experiece on how it compare to Dr.Z amps. Value, tone, and any other difference. I guess Reverend GOblin is comparable to Maz 18Jr and Kingsnake/Hellhound to a bigger Dr.Z.
thanks, David

songman, I own a Reverend Kingsnake 1x12 combo and a MAZ 18 jr reverb 1x12 combo. Next to a Goblin, I feel the MAZ Jr. would definitely overpower it. I can tell you that the MAZ does get pretty loud and can keep up next to the Kingsnake. Tone wise to me, the MAZ Jr. has a bigger and fuller sound to it, and MUCH more clarity and sparkle. The Kingsnake sounds duller than the Dr. Z. The Reverend may have a bit more clean headroom than the MAZ though. Both amps are kind of voiced in the upper mids, however the MAZ has a much fuller bottom end. In this statement, I am comparing the two amps in their stock form and as single 1x12 combos. Now, if you hook either of these amps up to a different cabinet, you that might have a different story. The reverb on these Z amps (should you choose that option) are far superior and awesome to that of a Reverend. I find the Reverend reverb very cheesy. A feature I really dig on the Kingsnake and Goblin and Hellhound is the built in power attenuator. The MAZ is as versatile as the Reverend because it can do the British (Marshall, Vox) tone as well as the American amp (Fender) tone. The trick is in the EQ with the MAZ, where in the Reverend the trick is in the schizo switch. The Reverend (38lbs) won't break your back like the MAZ (47lbs) will. For a 1x12 combo, it is pretty heavy and it feels heavier than what it is. For investment purposes, Reverends are no longer being made and may increase in value over time where Dr. Z is still making the MAZ. In conclusion, both amps are of incredibly versatile and offer incredible value and are fantastic amps for the working musician. The MAZ is the better amp though. I do intend on keeping both of these amps. Hope that helps some.

Thanks dgabbear » that helps me! I am new here. I have a Hellhound and I just tonight installed an Eminence Red White Blues speaker in it. Sounds way better now.
However, I did try a Maz 18 last year, and I am still wanting that amp. I remember clearly it had a sparkle and dynamic tone to it that the Hellhound can't quite match. I really dig the Hellhound, and won't part with it, but I think my next amp will be a Maz 18 Jr, and I'll use the Hellhound as a backup.

I had a Reverend Hellhound. It did not compare in any way favorably to the Maz 38. MyMaz 38 Sr 1x12 combo weighs 60 lbs compared to the very light Reverend amp but that was the only advantage the Reverend had. The Maz costs three times what I paid for my Reverend when it was new and I think it easily sounds three times better. At the time I compared side by side the Reverend and a fender Blues jr.. The Reverend was way better than the little Fender and only cost about $130 more. I sold the Reverend.

You are very welcome. The Revs are great portable little amps. Another thing that I notice between the Reverend and the MAZ is that, the Reverend has a stiffer sort of feel to it. When I plug into my MAZ everything just sounds great. I always wished the Reverend amps had a looser feel to them. Maybe it was the speaker. I was not hip on the Alltone as it was an underpowered speaker for the Hellhound. The neo speaker in my Kingsnake (while I like the weight), it does the job, but doesn't do a whole lot for me.

Most of the feel problem was the solid state rectifier. Those amps will always sound stiff. Put a plug in solid state recifier in any tube rectified amp and it will do the same, stiffen up, especially an amp that uses a 5Y3. Also the Hellhound is so ice pick bright that the only way they sound very good is in the UK mode. The Alltone speaker is rather dark compared to most other speakers. I think they were trying to tame those spikey highs. For a while I had a Kendrick Blackframe in my Hellhound. I liked that sound better.

I played a Hellhound at the local GC. Wasn't really that impressed with it. The British side was okay, but the clean "fender" side was not impressive at all. I had played a Maz Jr. the week before and got spoiled so I ordered one. I wish I could say I A/Bed them, but I played them on separate occasions. The bass on the Hellhound was also muddy, but it was a fairly well used amp...not sure if it had been modded.

I did a gig last night with my Reverend Kingsnake Combo due to small stage space circumstances, and I must say that I missed my MAZ JR. immensely. I have done a few mods to my Kingsnake to make it sound better (disconnect the negative feedback loop and clip the bright cap) My Kingsnake just sounded so cold and brittle compared to my SMOOTH sounding MAZ. This is by far the best amp I have ever owned.

Cheaper than my Dr Zs have been and to me it sounds like a million bucks. Apples and oranges, but the Rev is a great little grab and go amp and it screams with a good OD pedal.
