Hey everyone! First time poster here. I am a studio owner and tone FANATIC! Not much of a player (yet, still working on that), but I love having a pallet of tonal options for the bands that we work with in the studio. I currently own one Dr Z amp and it is by far my favorite amp that I've ever heard. I have a Maz Jr 2x12 combo and it's beautiful. I am a huge believer in the DR and wonder what another of his offerings might be that would complement the other amps I already have in my facility.
What I currently have:
-Dr Z Maz JR 2x12 -Bogner Shiva -Orange AD30 -Soldano SLO -Mesa Dual Rectifier -'79 Marshall JMP 2204
What is the next amp, and why?
THANKS!

If your maz jr is the reverb model, then your next deal should be to trade that amp in on a non-reverb model. it is a different beast altogether and to my ears it delivers the same tone but with a different level of harmonic complexity. it truly has to be heard to be appreciated.
If the good doc comes out with an EL34 based supro style amp like the one he did for Gaslite Anthem, then that will definitely be my next Z.

Looking at your amp list I'd suggest a Z28 or a Carmen Ghia. The Ghia really shines in front of a microphone.

Luckily for me I did buy the NR model on the Maz!
Do the Ghia and Maz sound much different? Or do they cross over a lot of the same tonal landscape? I'm in Washington state and we have one Dr Z dealer here, but they don't really have all the Z amps in stock, only a couple at any given time, so unfortunately I can't really hear them in person!

Ghia could be called less flexible than the Maz for live but tremendous for recording. 2 knobs Fantastc. An amazing thing to have in your studio.

Hey Brandon, welcome to the forum man! Not sure really what to add to that fold, depends on your budget, everyone here is hot on the Z Wreck right now. I would love a Z28, Ghia or Stangray to play around with, I have the Maz Jr NR and it's gotta be one of the sweetest amps out there today bar none!

Thanks guys!
I've been checking out the Z Wreck amps myself - so killer! My favorite guitar tone I've ever heard came from an original 59 Les Paul Burst through a Trainwreck amp and the videos I've watched online of the new Z Wreck has similar qualities! Outside of what I SHOULD spend on another amp right now - too bad they don't sell as a head only!

Looks like you are missing good Voxy and Fenderish tones (though the MAZ can get most of either). All of these have the Dr. Z touches of clarity and tight low end, but consider:
Voxy: Stangray, Prescription series
Fenderish: EZG-50 (blackface), Z28 or Galaxy (shades of tweed)

I'd go with a 6L6 based amp to cover some Fender blackface stuff. I guess the Mesa is probably filling that role currently.
EZG-50??

If I ever feel the urge to acquire another amp (pretty content right now), it'd either be a Rt 66 or a Remedy--in the spirit of Monty Python, you could say (and now for something completely different). I can't seem to bring myself to sell my Les Paul, so eventually I'll buy an amp that really lets it shine.

Been on vacation and missed this thread. First, welcome to Z-Talk! I'm a fellow Washingtonian and I happen to know that ECG has quite a lot of pretty cool Z amps just now (three of mine are there). That said, from the recordings I've heard here on the board I have to agree the Carmen Ghia might be a knockout in the studio. That amp has a lot of voices, but they are different from the Maz Jr. That said, every model has something interesting going on, which is one of the things I love about Z amps. You can hardly go wrong. A few that I have yet to own come to mind simply from the recordings I've heard: Rt 66; Galaxie; EZG-50; Monza. And a couple I've owned I think you could certainly find value with: Mazerati GT; Stang Ray. In fact, the Stang Ray is one of the best sounding clean amps of all time in my view. And the Mazerati GT is one of the best sounding "all dirt" amps of all time, yet quite different from any of the amps in your list. You're going to get a LOT of suggestions - Roscoe's are probably more on target for your application since he's running a studio too. And he knows what he's taking about.

Thanks everyone for the feedback! You guys are awesome. Couple votes for a few different amps here - looks like I'll just have to save up and get em all! Someday.. Now, I had originally ruled the Z Wreck OUT, for budget reasons, BUT.. if such were not the case, would you guys that have been recommending other amps change your recommendations to the Z Wreck?

For me, not enough data yet. I know the Ghia has a great track record in the studio, and I'm certain the Z-Wreck is one of the best live amps going, but I'm less sure about how well the ZW records - so far so good though. Since I don't have a Ghia here to compare with it, I'll have to defer to those that have both. I don't think you'll go wrong with either choice, frankly. The Z-Wreck is quite spectacular so far. I just have to get past having so much fun playing it, and set up the mics to record it!

I would go out on a limb and assume right out that in a professional recording studio setting (heck even a well setup home studio) that the Wreck will record like a champ. Case in point, the Dave B demo and Paisley recording on his last CD. B

Z-wreck sounds like a million bucks. Crazy dynamics. Lush. But for the studio, where volume/headroom/etc isn't really a factor, you can't beat the Ghia for the staggering amount of different sounds you can get from just those 2 knobs.

+1 for the Rt 66. A very unique, 3D full sound.
