Hey guys. I am a country classic rock tele/strat player. I have been chasing that modern country tone, Brent Mason/Brad Paisley, etc.
In the past few years I have owned a Maz jr 2x10 w/reverb, Z28 nonverb, and a Maz jr 1x12 w/reverb. Let’s just say I have heard a lot of people play though the Maz jr’s and have absolutely loved there tone, but just haven’t been able to fall in love with one myself. The Z28 was a very nice amp but I really had to push it hard to get the thick mids to come out and it didn’t have that chimy EL84 sound to it. Our band is on IEM’s and has good stage volume and I hate to ruin our mix out front with a screaming guitar amp. I actually have went to using a shield to deflect some of the sound. Forgive me, I am a sound and lighting tech on my off weekends so I have great respect for a bands overall sound.
To make a long story short, yesterday I was going to trade off my 1x12 Maz w/verb, I had tried everything: different tubes, speakers, beam blockers, multiple guitars and pickup combinations, stomp boxes, pedal buffers, cables…etc. I never can push the amp without dumping the treble and high mids. Again, I have read through about every post on the forum to try and fix the problem. For the past few years I have tried to run the amp very clean and use pedals to get that B. Paisley sound…..least to say my ear hated it. For me that modern country tone is an overdriven tube amp sound….very difficult to emulate with a pedal, got to be able to push the amp. Anyways I plugged into a Heritage Vox Ac15 at our local music store….that was it sounded great….then for the heck of it I plugged into a Maz jr NON REVERB………….I am now done amp/tone shopping. I had to run home and grab my Maz reverb to A/B the two…….I was blown away, both are great sounding amps but the Non reverb model is way fatter, thicker mids and overall just sounds better with a telecaster. It was a true apples to apples comparison from the tubes to the speaker, everything but reverb tank. Again the reverb model is a great sounding amp but if you are fighting the high mids and highs go grab a non-reverb model. I threw in the celestion blue and gigged it for the first time last night…….BLOWN AWAY! Best decision I have made in years! I tried multiple pedals and none of them sounded bad. I found myself using the barber ltd to add a little more dirt and a Fulltone OCD on 18v for some heavier stuff.
Just my 2 cents!
