Anyone know if the Ghia's transformer has the ability to run a 16 ohm tap?

I think I remember someone saying in the past (maybe even Doc) that the Ghia OT does not have a 16 ohm tap. However, you can run your 16 ohm cab into the 8 ohm tap - that is fairly common advice around these parts. There are some that disagree with that advice though, too. Might want to talk with the folks at Dr. Z.

Sent Z an email just now. I'm sure I'll hear from Brent soon enough.

Rule of thumb: Speaker Ohm rating higher than Amp Speaker Output rating = GOOD (ie: 16 Speaker from 8 Ohm tap = GOOD)
Speaker Ohm rating lower than Amp Speaker Output rating - BAD (ie: 4 Ohm Speaker from 8 Ohm tap = BAD)
I've tried the GOOD way and it works just fine
Pete ;D

Hey Prowler, Thanks for sending out that email to Dr. Z. I've always been told it is okay to do what Pete described above. However, some have said that it is harmful to the output transformer. Hearing the 4-1-1 from Doc will clear it up. Let us know what he says!! You know, I think that we are all a little paranoid about our output transformers on our amps. I know that I am. People say don't use a attenuator because it is not a dynamic load, etc.... However, Doc uses some pretty hefty transformers in his amps - just ask Phil. He has a Ghia (I think I've got this story right) that was covered up with blankets. Evidently, one of his children turned on the Ghia without it being hooked up to a speaker load. It sat that way 3 days!!! When he found it, it was super-hot and he was afraid that his Ghia was just plain 'ole cooked. I heard him play that Ghia last year at Z-fest - sounded good to me! Now that, my friends, is a torture test and a testimony to Z-Amps toughness. John

I have an email from Dr Z himself from about a year ago saying that running 16 ohms out of the 8 ohm out on the ghia will not hurt anything at all. In fact, I believe he said that you won't achieve full power and the tone isn't quite the same, but that some people actually prefer it. On that advice, I ran a 16 ohm speaker with the Ghia for about 6 months without the slightest hint of the tiniest problem.

The reply from Brent said that it's fine to do this.

Yep - any detractors I've heard in this forum generally say they heard it was bad from OTHER forums and other manufacturers: that sort of advice I plain ignore. The good Doc says it's okay; Myles says it's okay; Steve (benttop) and many other real experts say it's okay - IT'S OKAY! ;D I simply swapped my Maz18 NR 1x12 with 8 ohm G12H30 into the 4 ohm tap and played my heart out. Small drop in volume; no noticeable change in tone to my ears; no damage whatsoever to the Maz. ;D

I wish an 11th commandment or something would fall out of the sky...
