Maz Jr. for Church Gigs... I actually am rather shocked to see how many Z-Brothers are using their Jr for Church Gigs. On 3/12/2010 when I was looking for an amp to play at my Church, one of the boys at Ultimate Guitar, rubbed my nose on the Doc's work. (I thought I didn't want any pedals then too. How things change...) www.ultimate-guitar.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1286329&page=3Originally Posted by BostonrocksI've played on about 4 different worship teams. and I've seen another 20 play. most Pro worship teams use one of these amps:
Vox AC-30s Mesa Lonestars Mesa DC series are some what popular JCM series amps are somewhat popular I've also seen Plexi's everyone in a while
give me an idea of the worship bands tones you''re looking for
If you have money. and you're playing "popular" worship music I suggest Bad Cat or Dr. Z all the way.Now here in the Jr. section, I see more and more Praise and Worship leaders using a Maz Jr. How many people actually bought their Jr, with the intention of it being primarily used at their Church? I did.

definitely use my Jr for our worship. I only consider myself an average player, but boy do i get complements from the congregation. I think they mistake great tone for great ability.

The Jr, the Rx Jr, the Z28, and the Maz 38 when I had it - all attenuated with a plexi shield of course All have glorious tone!

I've gigged my MAZ 18 NR a ton at church (much more than any of the other Z's I've owned). It works great with all guitars, and gives just the right amount of volume (maybe even too much).
I've since sold off four other Z's because the MAZ does everything I need it to. Once in a while I think of buying an AC15, but I run the MAZ pretty clean and use pedals for drive at church so I'm not sure how different the AC15 would sound. Some? Yes, but not enough for me to justify at this point. I'd really like to get another Carmen Ghia head if the right deal comes along.
Like Jrudder, I wouldn't consider myself a 'great' player but I get a lot of compliments.

I use my Maz jr 210 w Verb at church, it's perfect. My sound guy loves it too. All the guitarists at my church seem to love my amp.

I REALLY want to use my Maz Jr for our worship service...but our room is just too small and the stage volume is really whisper quiet. I have an airbrake and just using a 1x12 I have it braked so strong and master so low...that it just isn't worth the set up hassle. I feel like its bringing a Porche for a 2 mile drive through a back roads 15 mile per hour speed limit dirt road. Why bother. Unfortunately, the best solution for me at Church looks like the line 6 stuff. I was set on getting an X3 live (ala Lincoln Brewster...and even downloading his patches), but I see Line 6 has moved on to some new "HD" series for this unit. The functionality of zero stage volume is forcing my hand here. Like I said..I "could" bring the Maz...but it just doesn't seem justified if I'm caging it to fully attenuated Mini Z volume levels. Good thing my Christian Outreach Rock band is a little more flexible on volume

Yeah I was forced to go the POD option for a while a couple of years back for the same reasons. Those were tough times. Then we got a new worship pastor who was a guitarist. He was pretty anti the POD, so we went back to amps but started mic'ing them back stage isolated in road cases. More hassle but better tone. I have a Vox Pathfinder 15r for practise, which is an amazing little 15 watt solid state. Sounds a million times better than it's specs/price suggests.

I use my Maz Jr at church every week. It sounds sooo good that I even have permission to use it right from the stage and have been asked to turn it up the last few weeks and let the amp fill the room instead of just using a mic'd cab off stage. I got asked to play a solo for our opening song this weekend and it just sang out so nice, such sweet singing sustain. I'm pushing the front of the amp with a Crusak Screamer fuzz and when I got to lead mode I am using my Lizzard Leg clean boost set at about 2 o'clock. I smiled most of the night after that!! Todd ps. I am NOT a pro worship team player, just a guy doing his best to serve the One who gave it all for me.

I'm another player who bought the amp for worship purposes! I play on 2 different worship teams, one while I'm at college, and one at my church at home. Having recently bought the Maz JR NR head, I havent played it at my church that I go to while I'm at college yet. In that situation, the amp and cab are right up on stage with me with the cab facing away from the crowd and sound panels around it. I used to have an Orange Rockerverb 50 head that was just way to loud so I needed something else. At my home church, we have an entirely seperate room for everyone's guitar amps and cabinets. Here, the master volume goes up to whatever I please. I wish I was fortunate enough to have the amp on stage with me...its a much better feeling when I do get to play through the amp and cab when its right next to me. I also play in a Christian band called the Caleb Rowden Band. I have yet to gig with the new Dr. Z head, so when I do, I'll have to let you guys know how it goes.

I am in the process of getting a Maz 18 NR head to go with my Z 1x12 cab, and I will use it primarily for rockin' some worship music. I cannot wait until I get my hands on it! My friend and I tried the Maz 18 recently and compared it to our other amps. He uses an AC30 and AC15 with blues, and I typically use an Orange Tiny Terror with my Z cab (I just got rid of my AC30). I love these other amps, but we both found that the Maz 18 NR was the best overall. It could get such good tones, from clean to lead! Pedals work really well with it. We all know that worship music uses a lot of effects! In any event, glad to see that there are a lot of us using the Maz 18 for church stuff!

I imagine we are all playing some Hillsong stuff, how do you guys with humbuckers get a nice Hillsongy clean with your maz?

When I use my McCarty's I usually use the low input. You can also turn the master volume up and the reg volume down to get rid of some of the grind, then use your Tim for OD & boost.

I usually set the volume on about 2:00 and the MV to taste. This gives up a really nice overdriven tone. When I need clean, I will use a combination of rolling down the guitar volume and lightening up on my pick attack.
The Jr is so responsive to pick attack that i find that i can get a really clean tone with this method.

I run both volumes and cut at noon, the eq's all just slightly back from noon (11:00) and I run my pedals into the low input. Simple and perfect for church with my Reverend Club King RT.

Hey another maz jr nr user for church... I set most knobs around 12:00 and low input with es-335 miked off stage with a sennheiser e906. I am a professional musician in the Houston area and have played with some well-known Worship leaders like Kari Jobe, Darrell Evans, and Paul Baloche. The amp is very direct and full. For Hillsong type stuff, try middle position on humbuckers with a digital delay set at dotted 8ths (Edge/U2 style). Get the master volume to where a hard strum will break up the power tubes a bit. A good listen is Hillsong's "Desert Song" or any of Nigel Hendroff's work. The Maz has that tone! Hope it helps, blessings!

Hey BurstBucker thanks for the welcome! Yes I've had my Maz for about 2 years, before that playing AC-30's and a deluxe reverb. The maz really captures the essence of all those great amps but is so interactive... It loves it's master volume cranked! I had a session recently with other "boutique amps" and nothing matches the growl and clarity of it. Thanks for the link on the tubes, specs, ect... Blessings!

I had an interesting time this last Sunday with my Maz Jr. We had a guest guitar player in town with no gear so I offered my stuff, and since I was scheduled to run sound I arrived early and set it up for him. I was also able to HEAR my gear as it sounds from the back - not just from two feet away. He was a very good player, using all the effects & OD's on my pedal board, as well as the single coil & humbucking option on my McCarty, and even making himself at home by tweaking the Maz's EQ's. He loved the amp, loved the TIM pedal as well, and now I know how my sound comes across to those listening - as long as the "Fader Dominator" treats the electric guitar player with as much passion as I did

Great post, Z-Steve! I always pray that God brings soundguys that are guitar players to our church. Ha!
I finally got my hands on my Maz 18 Jr. NR head, and it sounds soooo good! I am playing at church this weekend, and I am pumped to break out the Maz! We have rehearsal tomorrow night, so I'll let y'all know how it goes. I am positive that the sheer greatness of the Dr. Z tone will bring people closer to Jesus. haha!
Most of my knobs (other than master of course) tend to be set around 10 or 11 o'clock, and I like the sound of both the Lo and Hi inputs. My strat sounds great with the Maz, but I'm really looking forward to getting a Gretsch Duo Jet. I used my buddy's Duo Jet, and it sounded phenomenal with the Maz. It really gets a sweet "Hillsong-ish" tone.
Hope you guys had a great Christmas!

One of our sound guys is a great guitar player in his own right. A couple of weeks ago, i asked him to play through my maz jr/port city cab so i could tweak it a bit.
I was amazed at how good it sounded! sometimes hearing your rig instead of playing it is just what the doctor ordered.
I too would pray that all sound techie guys would be guitar players.

Yes, letting someone else play your gear while you sit back and listen is always enlightening, one way or the other! I played my Maz at rehearsal last night, and our sound guy couldn't believe the difference from the last amp I had. The Maz was so big a full. Great, rounded low end. Best tone I've ever had. Thanks, Dr. Z!!!
I hear great things about Port City cabs. Does it match well with the Maz? My Z 1x12 cab sounds so good right now, I can't imagine needing anything else!

My maz jr NR LOOOOOOVES the port city 1x12 oversized cab. I really cant get over how good my rig sounds with that cab. I have a very trusted source in the music biz that turned me on to these cabs. He is the guy whose opinion i trust the most and that is how i got turned on to port city to begin with.
anyway, not trying to sell here, but these cabs IMHO are as good as it gets.

Good to know about the Port City cabs. Keith Urban is playing them, and he seems to like them a lot. It would be fun to A-B the Z Best cab with a Port City 2x12. I've heard the Z Best, and it was tone heaven, and I think the Port City would have a challenge matching it. Something tells me you can't go wrong with either!
